The short answer

Your personal auto policy may extend some coverage to an eligible rental car. It is not safe to decide based on the phrase “full coverage.” Confirm the exact rental, drivers, destination and use before declining the rental company’s protection.

Ask these questions before pickup

  • Does liability coverage apply, and with what limits?
  • Do collision and comprehensive apply to this vehicle, and what deductibles would I pay?
  • Are all drivers, trip purposes, locations and rental dates eligible?
  • Are specialty vehicles, moving trucks, peer-to-peer rentals or business use treated differently?
  • Does the policy address charges beyond repairs?

Rental contract charges are a separate issue

The rental company may charge for time the car cannot be rented, reduced value, towing or administrative costs. Personal insurance may not cover every charge. Read the contract and ask the insurer how those charges would be handled.

What about the rental company’s damage waiver?

A waiver can change your contractual responsibility for eligible damage. Read its price, exclusions and conditions, including authorized drivers and prohibited uses. It is different from liability coverage. Compare what it provides with the protection you already have.

What about my credit card?

Ask the card benefits administrator for current written terms. Check payment and booking requirements, vehicle and country restrictions, rental duration, whether protection is primary or secondary, and whether you must decline a waiver. Do not assume card benefits include liability.

Is rental reimbursement the same thing?

No. Rental reimbursement generally helps pay eligible transportation costs after a covered loss to your insured vehicle. It is different from coverage for damage you cause to a car you rent.
