Insurance for Landlords, Rental Properties, Airbnb & VRBO in Ohio

McKinnon Insurance Agency specializes in insurance for property owners. From one rental house to a growing portfolio, short-term rentals, vacant properties and renovation projects, our team helps Ohio owners find coverage built around how the property is actually being used.

We work with Foremost Insurance, a longtime specialty carrier with dedicated landlord, vacant-property and short-term rental insurance options. Eligibility and coverage vary by property and policy.

Single-family rental property representing Ohio landlord insurance

Rental property insurance is not one-size-fits-all

Long-term rental homes and landlord policies — single-family rentals, duplexes and other eligible tenant-occupied properties.

Airbnb, VRBO and short-term rentals — properties rented to guests for shorter stays can create different insurance needs than a traditional lease.

Vacant properties — including homes between tenants or properties that otherwise meet vacant-property underwriting requirements.

Investors, renovations & property portfolios

House flippers and renovation projects — tell us whether the property is vacant, under renovation, being prepared for resale or transitioning to a rental.

Multiple rental properties — we work with owners who have one property as well as investors building larger portfolios.

LLC-owned properties — ownership structure matters. Let us know whether the property is personally owned, held in an LLC or part of a larger business operation.

Rental-property liability and umbrella coverage — owners with multiple properties should also review their overall liability limits and whether additional umbrella protection is appropriate.

What can a rental property policy cover?

Depending on the policy and property, the conversation may include coverage for the dwelling and other structures, premises liability, eligible loss of rental income, certain personal property used to service the rental, and optional protections available through the carrier.

A rental property is not the same exposure as an owner-occupied home. Occupancy, lease length, property condition, renovation activity, number of units and ownership structure can all affect eligibility and coverage.

Why we use Foremost for rental-property risks

Foremost has specialized in insurance for non-standard and specialty property risks for decades. Its property offerings include landlord and rental-property coverage as well as vacant-home programs, giving our agency options for property situations that may not fit a traditional homeowners policy.

For short-term rental use, tell us specifically if the property is advertised through Airbnb, VRBO or another home-sharing platform. Platform protections and a property owner's insurance are not necessarily the same thing, so the actual use of the home needs to be reviewed.

Rental Property & Landlord Insurance questions

Is landlord insurance the same as homeowners insurance?

No. A property rented to others has different occupancy and liability considerations. Tell us about long-term tenants, short-term rentals, vacancy or renovations so we can review appropriate coverage.

Does loss-of-rents coverage pay for every missed rent payment?

No. It generally responds to eligible rental income loss when a covered event makes the property uninhabitable, subject to policy terms. A tenant simply failing to pay rent is a different situation.

Can you insure an Airbnb or VRBO?

We can review short-term rental properties, including Airbnb and VRBO use. Tell us how often the property is rented, whether you also occupy it, and how guests book the property so we can determine available options.

What about a house I am flipping?

Renovation and resale properties need to be reviewed differently from an occupied home or long-term rental. Vacancy, construction activity, property condition and the planned timeline all matter.

Can you help if I own several rental properties?

Yes. We work with individual landlords and property investors. Bring us the addresses, ownership entities, occupancy and current coverage so we can review the portfolio property by property and discuss overall liability protection.
