Is My Trailer Covered by My Auto Insurance?
Understand the difference between trailer liability and protection for damage, theft, or loss of your own trailer.

General education, not a coverage determination or a promise of savings. Terms, limits, deductibles, exclusions, eligibility and discounts vary by state, carrier and policy. Two different questions
Liability addresses covered harm you cause to other people or their property. Physical damage addresses covered damage to the trailer itself. Having collision and comprehensive on the towing vehicle does not automatically give the trailer those coverages.
What may follow the towing vehicle?
An eligible trailer attached to an insured vehicle may receive liability protection under the auto policy. Trailer type, ownership, use and policy definitions matter. Ask about detached or parked trailers separately.
How do I protect the trailer itself?
Ask whether your carrier requires the trailer to be listed, an endorsement or a separate trailer or RV policy. A separate policy is not the only possible arrangement. Confirm collision, theft and other covered damage, the insured value, deductibles and settlement terms.
What about cargo or business use?
Tools, equipment, boats and other cargo can need different protection from the trailer. Personal auto coverage may not fit commercial hauling or other business use. Disclose what you carry and how you use the trailer.
Before you tow
Provide the trailer’s type, ownership, identification number, value, use and storage details. Ask: “What protects other people, what protects this trailer, and what protects its contents?” Review any lender or rental requirements.
