Does Renters Insurance Cover Belongings in Storage or While Traveling?

The short answer
It may. Renters insurance can protect eligible personal belongings away from your apartment, but storage and travel coverage are not unlimited. A landlord’s insurance generally protects the building rather than your possessions.
Before you rent a storage unit
Ask whether your policy covers property at that location, which causes of loss qualify and whether there is a separate storage or off-premises limit. Do not assume a percentage quoted online applies to your policy. Ask whether a move, a different residence or how long the items remain in storage changes the answer.
The facility’s agreement may require protection of its own. Compare that plan with your renters policy: covered losses, limits, deductible and excluded property can differ.
While traveling
Belongings stolen from a hotel room or car may fall under renters personal property coverage, subject to the policy. Damage to the car itself is a separate auto insurance question. Simply losing an item or having it break does not automatically mean there is coverage.
What could reduce the payment?
A deductible, depreciation, special limits for valuables and exclusions can reduce or eliminate payment. Flood, moisture, pests and gradual damage should not be assumed covered. Ask specifically about the losses that concern you.
A simple preparation checklist
Make an inventory with photos and receipts, estimate the value stored or carried, and identify jewelry, business equipment and other high-value items. Confirm replacement cost versus actual cash value.
What should I ask my agent?
“If these belongings are stolen or damaged at this storage unit or travel destination, which coverage, limit and deductible apply?” Confirm before you move or leave.
